Titans DT Haynesworth Tagged With Five-game Suspension
(Sports Network) - The National Football League suspended Tennessee Titans defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth for a record five games without pay on Monday.
Haynesworth was punished for unnecessary roughness against Andre Gurode of the Dallas Cowboys in the Titans' 45-14 loss to Dallas on Sunday. After Cowboys running back Julius Jones scored on a five-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, Haynesworth stomped on the head of Gurode, who had lost his helmet.
A flagrant personal foul was called on Haynesworth and he was ejected from the game. Gurode needed nearly 30 stitches to close a gash on his forehead and beneath his eye.
The suspension is the largest disciplinary action in NFL history. Previously, Green Bay Packers defensive lineman Charles Martin was flagged for two games after viciously slamming Chicago Bears quarterback Jim McMahon in November of 1986.
"There is absolutely no place in the game, or anywhere else, for the inexcusable action that occurred in yesterday's Titans-Cowboys game," NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said.
Haynesworth will be eligible to return on November 19 for the Titans' game at Philadelphia.
