Bears Crush Seattle To Remain Undefeated

(Sports Network) - Rex Grossman threw a pair of touchdown passes and the Chicago defense caused havoc all night, as the Bears easily handled the Seattle Seahawks, 37-6, at Soldier Field.

Thomas Jones finished with 98 yards and two touchdowns rushing for the Bears (4-0), who are the lone undefeated team in the NFC after handing the defending conference champion Seahawks (3-1) their first setback. Chicago is off to its best start since 1991 when it also started 4-0.

Grossman ended 17-of-31 for 232 yards without an interception, as Chicago racked up 362 total yards of offense compared to just 230 for Seattle, which exploded for 42 points last week in a win over the Giants.

"It was a great team win," said Grossman. "We played well in all phases of the game."

Bernard Berrian had a career-high 108 yards and a touchdown on three catches for Chicago, which passed its toughest test of the season to date. The Bears defense sacked Seattle quarterback Matt Hasselbeck five times and Ricky Manning Jr. came up with two interceptions, not allowing an opponent to score in double figures at home for an eighth straight time.

"I think we came together as a team," said Manning. "Our offense match the defense in intensity."

Hasselbeck ended 16-of-35 for 196 yards, but didn't throw a touchdown after tossing a career-high five last Sunday.

"The physical beating doesn't hurt as much as the disappointment of how we played," said Hasselbeck. We didn't execute any of the stuff we set out to do."

The Seahawks played without reigning league MVP Shaun Alexander and it showed. The Seattle running came produced just 77 yards, led by backup Maurice Morris' 35 on 11 carries. Alexander missed his first game after being diagnosed with a broken foot on Monday.

"They got us pretty good," said Seattle head coach Mike Holmgren. "We took it on the chin."

The Seahawks took the early lead, taking their second possession 57 yards on seven plays with Josh Brown ending it with a 23-yard field goal.

The lead, though, was short lived. Chicago scored the next 20 points and went into halftime with a 14-point lead.

On the Bears' ensuing possession Grossman hit Muhsin Muhammad with a nine- yard pass for a touchdown to take a lead they never relinquished. The 12-play, 69-yard drive was highlighted by a 15-yard run by Jones that brought the ball into the red zone.

Muhammad ended with five catches for 45 yards.

After holding the Seahawks to a three-and-out, Chicago bridged the first and second quarters with another scoring drive. This time Robbie Gould hit a 36- yard field goal for a 10-3 lead with just over 13 1/2 minutes left in the half.

Later in the quarter, Hasselbeck was picked off by Manning for the first time and the defensive back returned it to the Seattle 36-yard line. Nine plays later, Gould hit a 20-yard field goal for 13-3 cushion

Hasselbeck was again picked off by Manning on the third play of the next drive. Manning returned it for an apparent score, but an illegal block penalty gave Chicago the ball at the Seattle 37.

Grossman eventually hit Gabe Reid with a 19-yard pass to bring the ball down to the three-yard line and Jones punched it in from there for a 20-3 advantage.

Brown later hit a 24-yard field goal with 27 seconds left in the half, sending the game into the break 20-6 in favor of the Bears.

Chicago put the game out of reach in the third quarter. Jones ended the opening drive of the quarter with a one-yard TD burst for a 27-6 cushion. Later, Berrian caught a 40-yard TD pass for a 28-point lead.

Gould added a fourth-quarter field goal from 41 yards for a 37-6 lead.

Darrell Jackson led the Seahawks with five catches for 62 yards.
