Ohio State Strengthens Hold Of Top Spot In Poll

(Sports Network) - Ohio State maintained its hold of the top spot in the latest Associated Press college football poll after another strong road victory to close out a superb September.

The Buckeyes (5-0) went into Kinnick Stadium on Saturday night and posted a dominant 38-17 victory over Iowa. It was Ohio State's second road win over a nationally-ranked squad, having previously bested Texas on September 9.

Ohio State has won each of its five games by at least 17 points and the voters in a national media panel responded this week with 62 of 65 first-place votes for a total of 1,622 points.

Auburn (5-0) remained second and garnered one first-place vote, down one from last week, while Southern California (4-0), West Virginia (4-0) and Florida (5-0) completed the top five. The Trojans, after a tough 28-22 victory at Washington State, lost both of their first-place votes. The Mountaineers still received two No. 1 tallies.

Michigan, Texas, Louisville, LSU and Georgia rounded out the top-10.

Oregon moved up three spots to 11th and was followed by Notre Dame, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Clemson, California, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Iowa and Boise State. Iowa fell six spots after its loss to Ohio State.

Virginia Tech, Nebraska, Missouri, Rutgers and Boston College were the last teams ranked. Virginia Tech had the biggest fall, dropping 10 spots from 11th after a 38-27 loss to visiting Georgia Tech.

Boston College was the only newcomer this week, returning after a one-week absence thanks to a 22-0 win over Maine.

TCU, which had been 17th, fell from the rankings after its 13-game winning streak was stopped with a 31-17 home loss to BYU.

Two big SEC matchups highlight next week's schedule, as LSU visits Florida in a battle of top-10 squads and Georgia hosts Tennessee.

The Red River Rivalry is also on tap for next week when Oklahoma and Texas meet in their annual grudge match at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, while a Pac-10 tussle features Oregon at California.
