Frye Leads Browns To Win Over Raiders

(Sports Network) - Charlie Frye threw three touchdowns as the Cleveland Browns knocked off the hapless Oakland Raiders, 24-21, at McAfee Coliseum.

Frye went 22-for-32 with 192 yards and two interceptions and Reuben Droughns had 25 carries for 100 yards for the Browns (1-3), who have won six of their last seven games against the Raiders.

Joe Jurevicius, who had been out of action since suffering a rib injury in a Week 1 19-14 loss to New Orleans, had three catches for 22 yards and the game- winning touchdown.

"We feel fortunate to be able to come out with a win," said Browns coach Romeo Crennel. "I thought (Raiders coach) Art (Shell) had his guys ready to play. They did a nice job getting ahead in the game but our guys, they did a nice job coming back and fighting back from being down and being able to make enough plays in the second half to win."

LaMont Jordan had 20 carries for 128 yards and a touchdown and Andrew Walter finished 9-for-23 with just 68 yards, one touchdown and one interception for the Raiders (0-3), who have dropped five of their last six home games against Cleveland.

"When you play this game, you've got to play this game hard and you've got to make plays," said Shell. "We didn't make the plays when we had to and we didn't make enough plays when we're supposed to. We've got to do a much better job than that. It was just not good enough."

Cleveland got the ball to start the second half and put it into the end zone to cut its deficit to 21-17. The team started out on its 31 and drove into Oakland territory, but appeared to falter when on a 3rd-and-4 play Frye was sacked by Derrick Burgess. However, the team went for it on fourth down and Frye connected with Kellen Winslow Jr. on a 22-yard pass and, two pgain f

After stuffing the Raiders with a little over three minutes left in the third, the special teams again came up big for the Browns as Dennis Northcut returned the punt 58 yards to the Oakland 17. Four plays later, Frye hit Jurevicius in the back of the end zone and the receiver kept both his feet in to give the Browns their first lead of the game, 24-21, with 1:40 left in the third.

The Oakland offense, meanwhile, that had 188 yards and scored two touchdowns in the first half, completely faltered in the second half.

The first time the Raiders made it across midfield in the final 30 minutes was on a drive that started towards the end of the third quarter and through the beginning of the fourth. However, the drive stopped when on a 4th-and-1 play at the Cleveland 30, Jordan was stuffed for a two-yard loss by Orpheus Roye and Cleveland got the ball back.

The Browns appeared ready to seal the victory when they had the ball deep in Raiders territory. Frye, though, was pressured and threw the ball up for grabs in the end zone and Nnamdi Asomugha came down with the ball to give the Raiders another opportunity.

The drive, however, faltered and Oakland was forced to punt with a little under four minutes to play and the Browns ran out the clock.

"Obviously we got shutout in the second half," said Walter. "It's just unacceptable. The offense, we need to hit the gas pedal when we've got them down and keep going. That's something obviously we can't let happen and it's unacceptable."

The Raiders got on the scoreboard first with their first touchdown of the season, but it wasn't the offense that did it. On a 2nd-and-5 Droughns took the ball up the middle, but coughed it up when Tyler Brayton hit him. Sam Williams picked the pigskin up and took it into the end zone from 30 yards out for a 7-0 lead with 7:50 left in the first.

That was the score at the end of the first quarter, but the Browns had an opportunity early in the second quarter when they lined up for a 48-yard field goal. Phil Dawson's kick, though, went just a little right and the Raiders took over the ball on their own 38.

On the second play of the drive, Justin Fargas cut off the right end and took the ball 48 yards to the Browns 14. At the end of the play a face mask call on Kamerion Wimbley put the ball at the seven-yard line and three plays later, Walter found Randy Moss, who made a leaping catch at the right side of the end zone for a five-yard touchdown reception and a 14-0 lead less than five minutes into the second.

On the ensuing kickoff Josh Cribbs gave Cleveland excellent field position with a 65-yard return to the Oakland 32. The Browns offense, however, stalled at the 11-yard line and they had to settle for a 28-yard Dawson field goal with 5:08 left in the half.

Oakland, though, had the answer on its next possession as on the second play of the drive Jordan took the handoff and ran off the left end, cut back to the right side of the field and rumbled 59 yards into the end zone for a 21-3 lead with 4:08 to play.

Cribbs again fired his team up as he took the kickoff 53 yards to the Oakland 43. On 2nd-and-goal, Frye found Darnell Dinkins in the back of the end zone from three yards out to make it a 21-10 game going into the locker room.

"It just happened so fast, the (Raiders) fumble recovery for the touchdown and before you blink your eyes, we're down a couple of scores," said Frye. "So we knew the biggest thing was we wanted to score before the half and I thought that was big."
